Re. The best state park in the US
The best time to visit is meant to be sunrise, so I was told anyway by the Park Ranger and the people in my hotel. It's also my favourite.

Re. Crowded at the top but worth it
You could also try Mauna Kea, which is just as high I think but a less-risky option would be the Polou Valley Lookout. The outdoor lovers will adore it.

Crowded at the top but worth it
We just had to head almost 14,000 feet high to the Mauna Kea Summit, as we were told that it provided the best views of Hawaii's main island - or the 'Big Island' as it is known. We saw the lava, Mauna Loa, and the valley from here. Not to be missed but those who don't like being up so high might wish to try something a little less risky.

The best state park in the US
I think that Rainbow Falls is the best state park that I have been to in the US and I always enjoy spending some peaceful time alone sat beside the falls themselves. Not sure what the best time to head there is though, especially for photos and such!

The hike down to the bay
I paid the hotel shuttle bus driver a bit of money when he wasn't busy and he kindly dropped me off around 35.5 miles from the centre of the main city on Hawaii Big Island. I then had a great hike into Kealakekua Bay, which took around three quarters of an hour. I didn't try it, but there is meant to be great snorkelling there too.
