The holiday season on the Big Island of Hawaii generally falls between December and early April, and does not necessarily reflect the best time to visit. Hotels and similar accommodation options throughout the Big Island are at their most expensive, and the weather is not usually at its best, although temperatures are still reliably high and do offer a very appealing alternative to more usual winter weather.

The end of December is a particularly popular time to look for lodging on the Big Island and at this seasonal time of the year, hotels quickly get booked up as people looked to enjoy Yuletide celebrations with a difference - on the beach! Hawaii's low season is during the spring, between April and the middle of June, and this is when the island is at its least crowded, and accommodation is noticeably cheaper, together with airfares, especially when booked together as a complete holiday package.

Where to Stay

Once you have decided when to visit the Big Island, you will then need to choose where to stay. Accommodation is widespread, although does tend to be clustered in the main coastal towns and resorts, such as around the Kohala Coast and Kona. The Hualalai vacation rentals stand out on the North Kona coast and this stunning resort has recently been upgraded at the cost of some $40 million. Hilo is another great place to stay, around Banyan Drive, Honolii Pali, Hualani Street and Kalanianaole Street in particular.

Mid-range hotels are in good supply within the Kailua-Kona area of Hawaii, stretching along the coastline towards Kona-Keauhou. The most desirable accommodation in this part of the island features lodging with balconies and a view of the Pacific Ocean.

Many such hotels line the oceanfront Alii Drive, Manukai Street and Palani Road, and although they are often right next to the beachfront and around Keauhou Bay, the biggest do features their own swimming pools.

For glamorous and upscale accommodation in Hawaii, the Big Island's Kohala Coast is hard to beat.

The various resort districts are extremely spacious and spread out along the coast, being connected by the highway and including the resorts of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and also Kaupulehu.

Within Kaupulehu, the Hilton Waikoloa Village stands out as one of the most popular hotels and is known not only for its high standard of accommodation, but for its friendly Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, which actually live within the hotel's very own lagoon.

Located directly above the city of Hilo, the Hamakua Coast features more than its fair share of accommodation, as does the more northerly Waipio Valley area. Also on the Big Island, there are even hotels located in and around the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, along the Crater Rim Drive and the Old Volcano Road.
